چکیده

In electricfish ofthe mormyridfamily, an efference copy is present in the brain region that receives afferent input from ampullary electroreceptors. The efference copy is elicited by the motor command tofire the electric organ. Its effect is always opposite that of ampullary afferents responding to the electric organ discharge, and it changes to match variations in this afferent input. It probably reduces the central effects of activity in ampullary receptors evoked by the electric organ discharge.

An efference copy which is modified by reafferent input.

In electric fish of the mormyrid family, an efference copy is present in the brain region that receives afferent input from ampullary electroreceptors. The efference copy is elicited by the motor command to fire the electric organ. Its effect is always opposite that the ampullary afferents responding to the electric organ discharge, and it changes to match variations in this afferent input. It ...

The function of efference copy signals: Implications for symptoms of schizophrenia

Efference copy signals are used to reduce cognitive load by decreasing sensory processing of reafferent information (those incoming sensory signals that are produced by an organism's own motor output). Attenuated sensory processing of self-generated afferents is seen across species and in multiple sensory systems involving many different neural structures and circuits including both cortical an...

Synonyms Electrocommunication; Electrical communication Definition Every motor act that an animal produces will elicit sensory input from its own receptors [1]. Termed ▶reafference, this self-generated sensory input can be quite useful. For example, bats listen to the echoes of their own ultrasonic calls to navigate through the night, and sensory feedback from skeletal muscles can be used to im...

Oculomotor learning revisited: a model of reinforcement learning in the basal ganglia incorporating an efference copy of motor actions

In its simplest formulation, reinforcement learning is based on the idea that if an action taken in a particular context is followed by a favorable outcome, then, in the same context, the tendency to produce that action should be strengthened, or reinforced. While reinforcement learning forms the basis of many current theories of basal ganglia (BG) function, these models do not incorporate dist...

Afferent Input, Efference Copy, Signal Noise and Biases in Perception of Joint Angle during Active versus Passive Elbow Movements Introduction

Psychophysical studies have reported an overestimation of limb position in the direction of movement during the early part of active movements. The main hypothesis tested in this study is that the overestimation results from a process of forward prediction of limb state driven by an efference copy of the outgoing motor command. This hypothesis predicts that position overestimation should decrea...
